The Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP) test measures the level of alkaline phosphatase, an enzyme found in various organs throughout the body, including the liver, bones, kidneys, and bile ducts. ALP is involved in breaking down proteins and plays an important role in bone health, liver function, and bile production. Elevated or decreased levels of ALP can indicate a variety of health conditions related to these organs.
You may need this test if you’re at risk for liver conditions like cancer, cirrhosis, or hepatitis, or if you have bone disorders, such as Paget disease or healing fractures. High ALP levels can also occur in children with rapid bone growth.
