- It’s generally recommended to fast (not eat or drink anything except water) for four hours prior to a bilirubin test. In most cases, there is no need to fast before performing the Direct Bilirubin test. However, for any particular recommendations depending on your health condition, speak with your doctor
The Direct Bilirubin test quantifies the amount of bilirubin, a byproduct of the breakdown of red blood cells, in your blood or urine. The liver normally processes bilirubin, converting it into conjugated or direct bilirubin. This type of bilirubin is excreted through bile into the digestive tract and a small amount passes into the urine, giving it its yellow colour.
Direct bilirubin, also known as conjugated bilirubin, is a water-soluble form of bilirubin processed by the liver. It forms when unconjugated (indirect) bilirubin, which is not water-soluble, binds with a sugar molecule in the liver. Because of this transformation, direct bilirubin can combine with bile and travel through the intestines to be eliminated.
