AST, also known as SGOT (serum glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase), is an enzyme present in several tissues, with the highest concentrations found in the liver, heart, and muscles. It plays a vital role in amino acid metabolism by facilitating the transfer of amino groups between molecules.
